Since 1980, Van Valin Restoration has specialized in the relocation and restoration of nineteenth century log and timber frame structures of Wisconsin. These buildings, first constructed by European settlers between 1840 and 1900, are sadly disappearing at a rapid rate, due to both neglect and urban development. Our mission has been to locate and secure threatened buildings throughout the state and into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We investigate how the building was originally constructed followed by a thorough measurement and documentation of the structure, marking all the members before carefully dismantling it. The condition of the structure is carefully assessed, to determine whether it can be reconstructed as close as possible to how it was originally built, or if, due to deterioration or alterations made over the years, it needs to be adapted and altered. At that point it is ready to be delivered to your site, with detailed directions and diagrams for its re-assembly.
Log buildings vary greatly according to their builder's ethnicity, and the other type of logs and construction theme the builder used. Most of those we handle are hand hewn oak, ash, tamarack, cedar or hemlock. They are usually one and one half stories, and log houses vary in size from 16'x24', up to 24'x36'; while log barns are somewhat larger.
